The White Industries V2 VBC 2x Chainring System is a precision-machined chainring system designed for Shimano and SRAM 2x road and gravel drivetrains. We machine, finish, and inspect every chainring in our Petaluma, California facility. As a result, the V2 VBC system delivers crisp shifting, exceptional durability, and premium American craftsmanship.

Released in 2025, the V2 VBC (Variable Bolt Circle) system is compatible with Shimano 9-12 speed drivetrains, including 105, Ultegra, GRX, and Dura-Ace, as well as SRAM 10-12 speed Apex, Rival, and Red groupsets. It works seamlessly with both mechanical and electronic shifting systems, making it an ideal upgrade for modern road and gravel bikes.

The Variable Bolt Circle design gives riders unmatched gearing flexibility. Therefore, you can pair up to five different inner chainring sizes with a single compatible outer chainring. With 33 possible gearing combinations, the V2 VBC system allows you to optimize your drivetrain for racing, climbing, endurance rides, or mixed-surface adventures without replacing your entire crankset.

Every V2 VBC component has been completely redesigned for improved performance. The updated outer chainring features optimized tooth profiles, revised shift ramp geometry, five precision shift pins, a replaceable chain catch pin, and recessed inner chainring bolts for a cleaner appearance and increased chainstay clearance. Together, these improvements deliver faster, smoother, and more reliable front shifting.

The V2 VBC Chainring System remains backward compatible with all White Industries MR30 Series cranks and White Industries direct-mount square taper cranks. As a result, existing White Industries customers can upgrade to the latest chainring technology without replacing their crankset.

Available in black and silver, the V2 VBC system also offers five anodized chainring nut colors, making it easy to customize your drivetrain while matching the look of your bike.

V1 Compatibility

The original V1 VBC 2x Chainring System was discontinued in April 2025. However, White Industries will continue to support existing riders by offering replacement hardware. When replacement chainrings are no longer available, simply upgrade to a complete V2 VBC chainring set. The V2 system is fully compatible with existing White Industries cranksets, making the transition simple while delivering improved shifting performance and expanded compatibility.

Specs

  • Chainrings are made from 7075-T6 aluminum (except 48t-52t which are 6061-T6)
  • Available in black anodize or raw/un-anodized silver
  • Chainring nuts available in seven colors (these are on the outside of the rings)
  • You are purchasing a chainring “set” here which comes assembled, with hardware torqued to spec, and inner/outer rings in the correct alignment
    • V2 VBC 2x inner chainrings must be mounted to the outer chainrings in specific positions to ensure proper shifting
      • Refer to the “VBC v2 Chainring Assembly Instructions” below when doing maintenance/replacement

    • All the parts are different; inner rings, outer rings, chainring bolts, chainring nuts, and shift ramps
    • v1 and v2 hardware sets and individual hardware parts are available on our website if you need replacements

  • Combinations smaller than 12-tooth gaps or greater than 20-tooth gaps are not recommended
    • Greater than 20-tooth gaps are too big to shift well
    • Smaller than 12-tooth gaps can cause the chain to catch on downshifts and result in your rear derailleur being ripped off
    • We do not offer these combinations in “sets” for this reason
  • Outer VBC v2 chainrings cannot be used without an inner chainring
    • Outer are not stiff enough by themselves
    • They need the inner ring mounted to stiffen the whole assembly

Set up points

  • You are purchasing a chainring “set” here which comes assembled, with hardware torqued to spec, and inner/outer rings in the correct alignment
    • All you need to do is mount the chainring to your crank
      • The “chain catch pin” should point outward and align with the crank arm
    • V2 VBC 2x inner chainrings must be mounted to the outer chainrings in specific positions to ensure proper shifting
      • This is already done when you order a “set”
      • Refer to the “VBC v2 Chainring Assembly Instructions” below when doing maintenance/replacement

Torque

  • VBC chainring bolts: 7 ft lbs (10 Nm)
  • Chainring lockring: 30 ft lbs (40Nm)
  • Chain catch pin: Just past snug

FAQ

How can I tell the difference between V1 and V2 rings?

The V1 rings will only be black, there are four rivets in the outer ring, and White Industries is laser etched and white.  For the V2 rings the rings are available in both silver or black, there are five rivets in the outer ring, and White Industries in engraved into the ring.
